Photographing Abstracts: The Techniques Behind the Best Images

Excellent abstract photography doesn’t happen by chance. It is rarely the accidental blurred shot that ends up being a standout image. Instead, the best abstracts are created with intention and technique.
This session encourages photographers to expand their creativity. A whole new world of photography, artistry, and fun opens up when you break the boundaries of traditional imagery and explore photographing abstracts. Lisa will teach the techniques behind creating powerful, expressive abstract images.
Through instruction, videos, audience interaction, and inspiration, participants will learn:
• How to apply basic compositional guidelines to abstract images
• How to use intentional camera motion (ICM) and motion blur
• How to spot patterns and incorporate them effectively
• How contrast, shadows, color theory, textures, and edges help elevate your work
• How to present abstract images as compelling, artistic wall art and more

Bio – Lisa Langell
Lisa Langell is a lifelong nature photographer and birder who began photographing wildlife at age eight. She is the founder of Langell Photography, LLC and transitioned to full-time photography in 2010 after careers in floral design, educational psychology, and helping launch two successful EdTech companies.
Lisa’s work has appeared in Outdoor Photographer, Arizona Highways, Ranger Rick, and more. She is an Image Master for Tamron Americas, an ambassador for Fotopro Tripods, and a judge for ViewBug.
With a style rooted in psychology and design, Lisa’s passion is helping others grow through photography. Whether teaching online or in the field, she brings warmth, expertise, and a personal touch to every experience. She specializes in Alaska, Arizona, Florida, and beyond.
